PERFORMANCE-BASED ASSESSEMENT FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Author: Jacalyn Lea Lund, Mary Fortman Kirk

Physical education teachers can do one of two things: resist educational reform and the new forms of assessment or embrace them. We have chosen to embrace them. This book is the result of our work as teachers who have stumbled onto alternative ways of assessing students while in the gym and refined these ideas as teacher educators in a state immersed in education reform. Before writing this book, we spent many years in public schools ( 26 years, if you combine our experience ), which helped us to learn about the problems facing physical educators in the field. We have both been on state assessment task force writing teams and have learned the information we are about to present in a hands-on, discovery learning mode. Those experiences have convinced us of the value of assessment. Our years in the trenches have given us opportunities to see how assessment and instruction can work together to increase student learning.
