GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING IN EDUCATION

Author: Dr. Padam Nabh Vasudeva

The aims of education grow out of the individual needs and the understanding of the individual's nature. Education is determined by what life means to an individual and his social group, what is his chief aim and what kind of life he considers good for him. In a democratic set - up the aim of education obviously is the provision of facilities for the full development of the individual's potential. We aim to create a setup, which should promote the welfare of all, and provide for the individual development of every participating member of the group. By definition, education has a wider connotation than schooling. It is not confined to the classrooms but goes on outside the class and in every well-planned activity in which the student takes part. Defined in this way, education is a dynamic process of growth which lasts as long as life and in which practically all the adults play a role. It is not the sole responsibility of the teacher, the parent is playing a role in it as much as the teacher and so long as education is a state subject the politicians play an important role in determining the aims and philosophy of education. On the practical side, we can hope to accomplish the aims of education only if the public is made aware of our philosophy and definition of education. The teacher decides his methods and sets his goals according to what he understands about education and its aims .
