This book is based on personal experiences in playing and leading many types of games and on a college course, Games and Recreational Leadership, which I have been giving for a number of years to students from all parts of the world. My students have stimulated me to write this book by frequently commenting on the help they received by playing the game and then discussing it and thinking through alternative methods of leading it better, as well as considering the applications of the suggestions thus learned to similar situations and activities. The " Notes for Leaders " in this book give a partial idea of these discussions Each year each student specializes in a particular type of game and its leadership. Students report their studies and experiences in the form of term papers. Thus my students have provided me with invaluable suggestions from which I have culled notes for p teachers, leaders, and directors. In my opinion, it is these sites, rather than the games themselves, which make a contribution to the already abundant game literature.
