Operating a gym can be a profitable way to turn your passion for fitness into a viable local business. Gyms and fitness centers utilize unique business models mixing different types of service with product sales. The fitness center industry can be competitive in highly populated areas, however, and gym owners must constantly work to create and maintain competitive advantages over their neighbors. Stock a wide mixture of fitness equipment to appeal to a wide customer base. Include free weights, strength-training machines, and cardio equipment, at a minimum, and try to strike a balance between all types of equipment.
