ECOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Author: Dr. M. S. Sankaran

Ecology and environmental science are topics in the curriculum of almost all Universities. This is because of the awareness that ecological principles are important in understanding the various regulatory mechanisms of the living world. Ecology plays a pivotal role in tackling environmental problems such as pollution, climate change, and depletion of natural resources and biodiversity and also to understand phenomena like global warming, ozone depletion, and urbanization. Ecology provides the scientific framework upon which conservation programs or pollution monitoring schemes can be set up. Of late man has become aware of the fact that the cause of most of the environmental problems is his own reckless exploitation of nature and natural resources. It has become necessary now to formulate programs for the protection and conservation of the environment not only for the present generation but also for generations to come.
