AGING AND THE AGED CHALLENGES BEFORE INDIAN GERONTOLOGY

Author: Dr. N.K. Chadha

Demographic projections estimate that more than 176 million Indian citizens will be in the age group of 60+, comprising the second largest population of the elderly in the world and 13 % of India's total population by the year 2025 A.D. Given the nature of socio-cultural changes underway and the severe decline in the state's capacity to meet the welfare needs of the vulnerable section of the society, improving the quality of life of the rapidly increasing section of India's population is emerging as a formidable challenge. A relevant, valid, and adequate understanding of the social, cultural, psychological, economic, health, and other dimensions of the processes of aging, on the basis of which appropriate strategies for gerontological welfare would be formulated, is an urgent need of the day.
